A Comparison: Sailor Moon and Holst's The Planets
Welcome. I have created this web site for the sole purpose of telling why each of the seven movements of Gustav Holst's famous classical music piece, The Planets correctly describes the personalities of the seven respective sailor soldier heroines from Sailor Moon. It would be nice to bring fans from both great works together, and--hopefully--spark their interests. Certainly, both have fascinated me for a long time.
Below are the seven planets that were known in Holst's time. This shy man took up the hobby of Astrology. From that hobby, the idea for The Planets was born. The traditional order of performance of the seven movements is: Mars, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. He wrote the planets in the 1910's and Pluto was not discovered yet. When Pluto was discovered in 1930, Holst's health was failing and he could not write a movement for the planet. Unfortunately, he died four years later. Sailor Moon is a comic book and television series conceived by a Japanese woman named Naoko Takeuchi (Takeuchi Naoko, if spoken in Japanese). Takeuchi has mixed astrology, astronomy, and mythology to create a semi-believeable super hero story staring a slightly self-centered girl who transforms into Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon's comrades--her fellow sailor soldiers--are named after the nine heavenly bodies of the solar system. But on a happier note, I have personally found some other classical pieces which might fit in with the Moon, Earth and Pluto. "Moonlight" is by Claude Debussy, "Adoration of the Earth" is by Stravinsky, and "Death and Transfiguration" is by Strauss. Respectively, the three can be associated with the two planets and Moon. Furthermore, I did not think it would be fair to exclude the main two characters from Sailor Moon and my favorite soldier, Sailor Pluto. So, you could say that these three pieces are extra special to my web site. Again, enjoy them! Updates! If you'd like, you may view my own opinons of the seven movements of The Planets. You can find the planets Mars, Venus, Neptune, and Uranus in the "Who's Gustav Holst" link. You can find Mercury, Jupiter, and Saturn in the "Who's Naoko Takeuchi link. I will try to update my page a soon as I can from now on! (February 18) Finally, I got a whole page that tells about the different The Planet CD that I have seen. Please take the time to look at them! (February 23) I just added a section that tells about the Astrological significances of the eight non-Earth planets in the Solar System. There is also a page where you may take some of my new banners and link my page up to yours. Lastly, I have included a place that better describes the television show and comic Sailor Moon. |

I take no credit in the creation of Sailor Moon or The Planets. Sailor Moon is the creation of Naoko Takeuchi. The Planets is the creation of Gustav Holst. This web site is, however, my creation. Email: antares7@csd.uwm.edu.
